Revealed: New Citroën Metropolis plug-in hybrid limousine concept

Citroën has revealed its much anticipated Metropolis plug-in hybrid limousine concept, I have only one word to describe it “HOT”. Too bad its not coming into production very soon. Citroën is not known much for its concepts but they have really created an example of art here. This masterpiece has been created by Citroen international design team based in Shanghai in since 2008 for debut in the ongoing French Pavilion at the Shanghai World Fair from 1st May to 31st October, 2010.

This majestic piece of artwork clearly gives an indication of China`s vision of creative and sophisticated luxury in the coming years. The sleek limousine concept is a blend balancing environmental responsibility with luxurious comfort and driving pleasure. This amazing 5.3m long by 2m wide by 1.4m high vehicle produces impressively low CO2 emissions of just 70g/km with a 2-liter, V6 petrol engine and an electric motor developing 70kW at its peak under the hood.

Talking about the design it can be easily made out that its design language is inspired from Hypnos concept, Built on a modified version of PSA Group’s Platform 3 which is used in cars like Citroën C6 and Peugeot 407. Citroën Metropolis’ subtle ‘Pearl Silk’ body colour changes under different light conditions, revealing the model’s generous curves and ultra-honed detailing. Citroën Metropolis blends taut lines with smooth surfaces, evidenced particularly at the front where the sculpted, incisive wings and kite-shaped grille merge with the harmonious contours of the bonnet. The streamlined headlamps have an imperious and steely look, giving Citroën Metropolis a natural air of authority.

The V6 petrol is mated to a 7-speed, dual-clutch electronic gearbox and delivers 272bhp (200kW) and 375Nm of torque. The conventional engine is used at “steady speeds on main roads ” with the electric motor kicking-in when required to deliver maximum power output of 460bhp (345kW) and 430Nm of torque – the same as a 4-litre V8 petrol engine. At low speeds the electric motor takes over entirely to make the Metropolis a zero (local) emissions vehicle and when conditions are slippery on the road, a four-wheel drive mode can be selected.

Apart from the hybrid drivetrain a Hydroactive suspension has also been incorporated for better ride and handling.
